Whichever way you look at it, Vryheid is "small town". Do the people of Vhd want it to become a "metropole", with all the crime and grime that go with it. Having lived in the town for only 3 years, employment is hard to find, esspecially in the technology industry. What is this new development really going to do for the people of Vryheid? That is the question. The people living in the imediate surrounds of the square will be inundated with loiterers and litter. Just have a carefull look around the new Pick n Pay centre. Who is going to ensure the security of the "neighbours". Also, what will become of all the existing shops in town? They will become a haven of 'low cost' shops such as that on the far east side of town. The town center will become squalid and even more dirty than it is. For a history leason, just look at any other town where the shops move out of the center of town. Yes, at the moment, there are people who lie around on the grass, but better there than in town. The only people who are going to gain are the council and developers. One question for Dingbat, ProDevelopment, Thami, Frikkie 5000 and Ja dit maak saak..... How would you feel if the new development be built next to your property? There are massive areas to the West and East of the town where a new centre can be built.

I haven't been back to Vryheid since the early 80's, but trust me kids (13/14/15 etc) were drinking and fighting and falling pregnant in the 70's when I was at school in Vryheid. These things happened at the cemetery, Stilwater Motel, President Hotel, in cars with older friends, at the dams etc etc etc. And then most of them sat "penorent" with their parents in the churches on Sundays. Kids will be kids and the development of a new shopping center or whatever is not going mean one iota to their morals or lack thereof. The more things change the more they remain the same. makiesakie, what you said there is so true. we have left vryheid just over 3 years now and i have been back twice. the things my friends got up to and then as you say still go to church and pretend to be all innocent and good happens. after my 2 visits back to vryheid, i just realised that there is nothing there for me and if i ever consider to move back to SA it deffinitly wont be to vryheid

Hoori hoori hoori! Wat isit met julle mense? Verandering is nie 'n kwade monster waarteen ons in shining suits of amour moet optrek nie, nee inteendeel. Change is eneviteble except from vending machines...

Net so julle ouens, kyk 'n bietjie mooi na markplein! Snags slaap die "krieke" en ander "goggas" daar en loer waar hulle volgende gaan toeslaan. Vra maar vir die inwoners om die park......
As jul onwikkeling gaan stop omdat ander voel dit is 'n bedreiging vir hul ondernemings, dan moet julle jul koppe laat lees. Staak ontwikkeling en die dorp en sy mense gaan stagneer. Die plek is reeds 'n blerrie dump, nou wil julle nog onwikkeling keer!!

Oh yes, xpm, before I forget... I would like to reply to your post (Reply #15 on Jan 21, 2006, 10:08am ), as quoted above. How would you feel if you live in the park area and the following happens to you, not once, but repeatedly? Scenario 1: You have been called out to a breakdown, your wife calls you hysterically about someone trying to enter your flat. She's alone at home with a four week old baby! Scenario 2: Your wife wakes you up in the middle of the night telling you that there's someone tampering with the door. When you get up to investigate one of the "park residents" tries to enter your flat! Now I ask you with tears in my navy blue eyes... is it really worth it to "save" the park at cost of the Vryheid residents. Guys!!! Get your facts straight please, before you go against development!!

Listen! Vryheid has been stagnant for how long now, with little development ever since the mines closed in the '90s. ...so don't you guys think that it is time to start moving ahead again? I say well done for putting up the pick and pay mall, I say well done for wanting to move on and develop the market square. guys, you can't hold on to sumthing forever, you have to learn to deal with a changing world, and if you are not able to do so, you are going to have a misrable life, because, according to the great philosopher Schopenhauer, life is all about how well you are able to adapt to change, because life is constant change. Come on you guys, give change a chance, not all change is bad. So speaks Dasje
